Mom’s Tip of the Week 11
Did you know ... ?
The blood vessels in the placenta are expanding in size and number. This is to make sure that your little one has all the nutrients needed for his upcoming rapid growth (from two inches now to eight inches by week 20). Continue to pay attention to eating the well-balanced diet—including brain-fueling docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—that is needed for your baby’s continued growth and development.
Your Baby at 11 Weeks Pregnant
What’s Happening in There
- Your baby is now about two inches long. He weighs about one third of an ounce.
- Your baby is officially called a fetus. He’s no longer an embryo!
- His facial features continue to develop. His eyes are spaced widely apart, and his eyelids are fused. His ears have moved to the sides of his head, in their final position.
- His organs are working hard. His liver is creating a lot of red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout his body.
- Genitals are developing. Your baby’s genitals are developing into a penis or clitoris. If your baby is a girl, her uterus and ovaries are forming this week. But at just 11 weeks pregnant, it’s still visually hard to tell the difference—by week 14 it will be very clear.
Baby Brain Waves
Your Baby’s Brain Is Developing
Your baby’s head is still growing speedily. Right now, it makes up half the length of his body. Your baby’s brain is continuing to mature, too, with synapses (connections) forming in the cerebral cortex —the portion of the brain responsible for complex functions, such as language and processing information.
