There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to preparing formulas. That’s because there are three different types of formula available to fit you and your baby’s needs: powder, ready-to-feed, and concentrate.1 Ready-to-feed formula is pre-prepared and ready to serve. Powder formula and liquid concentrate formula need to be mixed with water.
What Do I Need to Prepare a Formula Bottle?
Here are some items that you’ll need to prepare infant formula:1
- Safe drinking water (for powdered formula or liquid concentrate formula)
- Bottles, nipples, rings, discs, and caps
- Thermometer (for powdered formula)
- A large pot with a lid or a kettle for boiling water
You may also want to use spoons or mixing utensils to help you prepare the formula.1
How to Prepare Newborn or Infant Powdered Formula
Before handling newborn or infant formula, it’s important that you wash your hands thoroughly. Once you’ve washed your hands, it’s time to prepare the formula:
- Start by boiling bottles, caps, nipples, scoops, and utensils in water. Boil for two minutes at a rolling boil.
- Boil fresh water for two minutes at a rolling boil. Let the water cool to room temperature before mixing it.
- Pour the room-temperature water into the bottle.
- Add the powder formula, cap the bottle, and shake well.
Infant formula can spoil quickly. Serve the bottle immediately after preparing it, or cover and store it in a refrigerator at 2-4°C (35-40°F) for no more than 24 hours. Never freeze prepared baby formula, and don’t serve formula that’s been unrefrigerated for more than 2 hours.
How to Prepare Newborn or Infant Concentrate Formula
Preparing a concentrate formula is similar to preparing a powdered formula. To prepare concentrated formula for your newborn or infant:
- Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
- Clean the top of the can and shake it well.
- Open the can of baby formula and pour the desired amount of water into the bottle. Add an equal amount of concentrated liquid.
- Cap the bottle and shake it well.
Opened cans and prepared concentrate formula can spoil quickly. You should feed the prepared formula immediately or cover it and store it in your refrigerator at 2-4°C (35-40°F). If you refrigerate the formula, use it within 48 hours, and never freeze it. Don’t use an opened formula can or prepared formula if they have been unrefrigerated for over 2 hours.
How to Prepare Newborn or Infant Ready-to-Feed Formula
If you’ve chosen ready-to-feed formula for your newborn or infant, here’s how you can prepare it:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Shake the bottle well.
- Remove the cap and foil seal.
- Pour the formula into the feeding bottle(s). Cap the bottle and shake well.
Opened bottles can spoil quickly, so once you open a bottle, you should feed your baby immediately. You can also store the prepared formula in the refrigerator at 2-4°C (35-40°F), but it should be used within 48 hours. Don’t use opened or prepared bottles that have been unrefrigerated for more than two hours.
